Our club came into existence in the mid 60s – now, half a century on, we are still going strong. Initially, Dunhill GAA Club got the ball (literally) rolling, when they were granted land in the village by the Parish Priest, and built one court (Now Court 2). Squash had arrived in Dunhill. The idea of starting a squash club was the brainchild of several GAA members including Jim Harney, who is still very much part of the set up, and Paddy Lyons, still serving on committee after all these years.

After several years the GAA handed the squash over to a separate committee, and the two stalwarts mentioned above were joined, amongst others, by Mary O’Loughlin and Mary Harney – both still very active in the club’s affairs.

Leagues were started and various other initiatives undertaken. In short order membership grew to over 60. In 1978 the members constructed a second court with support from FAS, and lots of fundraising. Again the Parish donated the land.

We now had a very active junior section, and increased membership put pressure on court time. Jim Harney kindly gave extra land to the club to build a third court in 1985. While a contractor was hired to do the main build, the members rowed in and did a lot of the donkeywork.  This is the kind of place that Dunhill is – a great community that gets on with supporting each other.

Changing facilities were limited in the early years, but this was rectified in the early 90s when “proper” changing and shower facilities were added.

In season 2014/15 all courts were insulated and heated.

Dunhill Squash Club has always been fortunate to have committed members and good committees that continued to drive forward, and the story is far from over…….
